As a student in the Flagship, your path is designed so you not only master language mechanics of Mandarin Chinese, but also build cultural competence. You must complete core language courses through 4th Year Chinese, 5th-year Chinese language content courses, and cultural studies courses. You must also meet a literary and media Chinese education requirement before you can participate in the Capstone year abroad.
Students come to the program with varied levels of proficiency in Chinese, diverse academic interests, and unique long-term goals. For that reason, there are a variety of possible progressions through the program. Once admitted into the program, the director and Flagship student advisor formulate an individualized program path to help each student reach program proficiency benchmarks.
