For over a decade, Indiana University has offered students the opportunity to live in Bloomington and study Chinese intensively over the summer through the Flagship Chinese Institute (FCI). FCI was established in 2009 through a partnership between the Indiana University Chinese Flagship Program and The Language Flagship.
Since its inception, FCI has served as a primary domestic summer study center for the prestigious Chinese Flagship programs throughout the country. It is pedagogically designed to serve as an important step in The Language Flagship’s ambitious mission of creating new models of language learning that produce college graduates with professional-level proficiency, and it has been hailed by many Flagship students as a critical component of achieving their goals.
FCI is now housed alongside more than 24 languages within the Hamilton Lugar School’s Language Workshop and is referred to as the Chinese Section of the Language Workshop. IU’s Language Workshop staff, Chinese Flagship Program leadership, along with the East Asian Languages and Cultures Department collaborate to develop, deliver, and manage four levels of proficiency-based courses each summer.
The legacy of the Flagship Chinese Institute lives on within the Chinese Section of the Language Workshop and continues helping hundreds of students cultivate their mastery of the Chinese language and their understanding of Chinese culture while preparing them for international careers.
