In 2009, The Language Flagship partnered with the Indiana University (IU) Chinese Flagship Program to create the Flagship Chinese Institute (FCI). A national resource, FCI was built to serve not just IU students but also those from Chinese Flagship programs across the country.
FCI instruction is based on The National Flagship’s innovative models of language learning and designed to articulate with the Flagship curriculum and help students graduate with professional-level proficiency in Chinese. Many Flagship students credit Indiana’s program as a critical component in their success at achieving this ambitious goal.
In 2018, FCI joined the IU Summer Language Workshop, one of the oldest and largest summer language training programs in the U.S. As the Chinese Section of the Language Workshop, the FCI program continued unchanged, with the same methods and goals. The program has evolved since then, but IU’s Chinese Flagship Program, East Asian Languages and Cultures Department, and Language Workshop work closely together to ensure that the program continues to fulfill its original mission of providing Flagship-level instruction using Flagship pedagogical techniques to deliver proficiency-based instruction to all students.
