Eligibility

Who is eligible for Chinese Flagship?

Chinese Flagship encourages students of all levels of Chinese language proficiency to apply for our program, including students with a Chinese background, heritage learners, and students with zero background in Chinese.

To apply, you must:

  • be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident
  • have at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA as an IU student
  • be committed to achieving Superior level Chinese through completing necessary coursework, fulfilling program extracurricular requirements, staying in good academic standing, and completing a summer abroad and the Capstone year abroad

Because of safety and security policies, students who are dual citizens with Taiwan are ineligible for the program.

Additional Requirements

Our Flagship students are expected to follow certain requirements to remain in the Flagship, such as:

  • Be enrolled in a Chinese course every semester while at IU
  • Maintain in good standing in Chinese courses
  • Complete assigned hours of tutoring every week
  • Participate in required number of Flagship-hosted events per semester
  • Attend Chinese Tidings Lectures
  • Complete benchmark proficiency assessments
  • Successfully complete the Capstone year abroad
  • Meet with HLS Language Flagship Advisor at least once a semester
  • Maintain in clear communication with Flagship team and administration
